Aww! Couple from St. Clair Shores blessed with rare identical triplets.
ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. (WXYZ) - The Whiteley family of St. Clair Shores has grown by three! Lauren & Mike Whiteley just brought home their one-month-old triplets from Henry Ford Hospital's NICU a few days ago.
"It's been crazy, but a definite big blessing," says Lauren Whiteley.
The family truly beat the odds with these babies. The reason? The triplets are identical. Doctors say it's a one in a million chance.
"We found out early on in the pregnancy in a routine ultrasound. She said, I see three. I said, What???," says Lauren Whiteley.
Her husband Mike says, "It hit me pretty bad. It was overwhelming. I'm like, holy cow!"
What makes this even more amazing is that the babies were conceived naturally. There were no fertility treatments used. The Whiteley's say multiples don't even run in their family. Even their doctor was surprised.
"The fact that they're identical is incredible. It's the first set of identical triplets I've ever seen. I've been in neonatology for 40 years," says Dr. Savitri Kumar of Henry Ford hospital.
The Whiteley's really have their hands full because they already had two other kids: 3-year-old Lucas and 2-year-old Nolan.
"They've been great. We were pretty worried about how they'd be when we came home, but everything has been smooth sailing. We're thankful for all the help. We've been able to give them one-on-one attention thanks to our parents, family and friends," says Lauren Whiteley.
